Knowledge Infrastructure is about what a company remembers.

Not what it stores. Storage is easy, and most firms have far too much of it. Remembering is different. It means that when someone asks why a thing was done a certain way, an answer exists, and it is the real answer rather than a reconstruction.

Most of what an organisation knows has never been written anywhere. It sits in the head of the person who has done the job for nine years, and it walks out of the building when they do. What does get written down goes stale quietly, because nobody updates a document until the moment they urgently need it to be right.

Machines made the problem sharper in two ways. They need exactly the context nobody wrote down, and they cannot walk over and ask for it. And the work itself moved into chats and prompts, which are private by default and searchable by nobody. A decision made in a thread is a decision the company did not make.
